Questions
All 17 questions, in the order people tend to ask. If yours is missing, email Shiyu.
Do I need to code?
No. The crew already built the product and keeps building it. You bring the half it is missing: content, community, growth, sales, operations, product, design or industry knowledge. Each build lists the one to four seats it needs.
Is the seat paid?
No. A seat is unpaid during Orbit, the 30-day trial run. Your slice is granted at Landing (day 30, or day 60 after a second Orbit), when the company forms, and vests on a 2-year clock with a 3-month cliff.
Who owns what I make?
The build’s company owns everything you make, and it stays there when anyone leaves. Before Landing there is no company, so Build w/ Strangers holds the assets in the build’s name and moves them into the company at Landing. If a build stops, the assets stay with Build w/ Strangers. The Terms page has the full list.
Who is the crew?
One person today: Shiyu (he/him), known as the Jack of all Prompts. He builds every product listed here with a lot of prompts, runs the infrastructure and stays on as the technical team after Landing. The alien part is a joke. Mostly.
How does the crew make money?
The crew makes money only through its equity in each company. It charges no fees, takes no salary and adds no markup on servers. The crew pays for infrastructure until the company has revenue. If a build earns nothing, the crew earns nothing.
What happens in Orbit?
Orbit is the first 30 days of a build, when you and the crew work toward one goal before anyone lands. You agree the goal, each person’s hours and who does what. At day 30 you decide together: land and form the company, Orbit again with a new goal (once only, so Landing moves to day 60), or part ways with no hard feelings.
How much equity does a seat get?
It depends on the build, and the split is published before you raise your hand. At Landing the crew holds 35 to 55%, 10% goes to the pool for later hires, and the human seats share the rest equally. A Standard build with one seat splits 45 and 45. Everyone vests over 2 years with a 3-month cliff, the crew included. If you miss the co-founder bar at month 3 (the role, your number, the founder agreement), the residency ends before anything vests.
When am I a real co-founder?
You become a co-founder at month 3 after Landing, if you clear the co-founder bar. You did the role (the weekly hours and check-ins you agreed), you hit your month-3 number (set for your role at Landing) and you signed the founder agreement. Then the first 3 months vest at once, and you get the Co-founder title and a vote on big decisions.
What is the tail?
The tail is the revenue share you keep after you leave a company that has landed: 10% of the revenue from deals you closed while a resident, for 12 months after you leave. If the build stops before Landing, or the company closes, there is no tail.
Can the crew remove me?
Yes. Every human seat is a residency, held while the role is being done. If it isn’t, we say so in writing and give you two weeks to turn it around. You can leave the same way, any time.
Do I sign an NDA or a non-compete?
Neither. Learn everything you can and take it to your next build, or use it to compete with us. Two things stay behind: the work you did belongs to the company it was done for, and its customers aren’t yours to take.
Do I own my idea?
No one owns an idea, and a Signal is not confidential. A Signal sender gets a spark share instead: 1% of the company, taken from the pool and fully vested when the build lands. You also get the credit on the build. The code and the company belong to the company, as on every build.
Can I be cut if the idea was mine?
Yes, your seat can end, but your spark share stays. A Signal sender has the same three endings in Orbit as everyone: land, orbit again, part ways. If you part ways, you keep the credit, and the 1% spark share if the build lands without you. Seat equity is only granted at Landing, so there is none to give back. Before Orbit starts, a stranger cannot take your reserved seat.
What if the crew already builds something similar?
The crew can build it anyway. A Signal has no NDA, so the crew may already be building something close, or may build it later. If two people send the same idea, the first sender with proof of pull gets the build.
How many Signals does the crew build?
The crew builds at most two Signals each quarter, picked from the Signals that arrive with proof of pull: 10 people on a waitlist, or 5 customer conversations. If the product never works, nobody is cut. The crew shelves the build, and you get the first right to take the idea back. The code stays with Build w/ Strangers.
What does ‘working product’ mean here?
A working product is one that runs today and can show it. Each build lists what works now, its stage, and numbers like users or test runs. If it is only an idea or a pitch deck, it is not listed.
